A free fishing day is a date when an agency lets people fish without buying a license. It is meant as a low-cost introduction to the sport. The details differ more than most anglers expect.
What changes, and what does not
- Only the license is waived. On Ohio’s free days, size and daily limits still apply, and Virginia says the same about its fall free days.
- Who qualifies varies. Texas opens its free day to everyone. Ohio and Indiana describe theirs for residents. Minnesota’s weekends are targeted: one for residents who are moms, others for residents fishing with children under 16.
- Some waters stay paid. Virginia notes that fee fishing areas still charge.
- Extra stamps. Indiana’s free days also cover the trout/salmon stamp. In Minnesota the trout/salmon stamp is a separate purchase on normal fishing days, so check how it applies to a weekend before you target trout.
Dates we have verified
Dates come from the agency pages linked below, and the full table with our verification date is on the free fishing days hub. Texas lists Saturday, June 5, 2027. Minnesota lists a Take a Kid Ice Fishing weekend for January 16–18, 2027. Ohio, Indiana and Virginia had not published 2027 dates when we checked, so we do not list any.
Free days are not the only way to fish without a license
Texas also lists free fishing inside most state parks (park entry fees still apply) and on water fully enclosed on private property. Other states have exemptions for particular groups, such as seniors or children. These vary widely, so we only describe the ones we have confirmed on an official page.
One more caution: Indiana’s agency page shows the 2026 dates in its heading but still has older dates in the body text. When an agency page contradicts itself, call or check the agency’s latest news before you plan a trip.
